DESCRIPTION: Length Up to 3cm. Similar to the female Stag Beetle but this creature is blacker and has only one spine on the middle tibia. The elytra are gently curved at the sides whereas the pronotum is parallel-sided and only slightly wider than the head. The head of both sexes bear obvious mandibles with the males slightly larger. The antennae are also block and knobbled. BEHAVIOUR: Breeds in rotting timber primarily in deciduous woodland. Prefers the wood to be above soil level. Attracted to light. The adults feed on the sap of deciduous trees. DISTRIBUTION: Found locally in southern Britain. HABITAT: Deciduous woodland. PERIOD: Can be found throughout the year although Summer is best when the beetles are on the wing.
